I remember watching re-runs of this cult classic. I didn't think much of him at the time, he mostly sat around sleeping on his cushion and let the mice run around him. Also those old sepia photos in the series did freak me out a little.
Now I realise how funny the Bagpuss name is and how he has bags more personality than Hello Kitty. He may not be violent like Tom from Tom & Jerry or cunning like Top Cat, but he's laid back and chilled out. That is where the charm is for me.
Maybe the best way to learn a new language is to immerse yourself straight in at the deep end. Go to a country which only speaks the language you want to learn, then visit the shops to get a pint of milk. That is not always pratical.
Is it possible to learn a new language just by watching TV with no subtitles in that language ? My parents only ever spoke the Hakka dialect of Chinese to us. As kids me and my siblings used to watch lots of TV video tapes from Hong Kong in the Cantonese dialect. One tape would be 3 three hours long and we used to watch 2 of them non stop. Six hours of Doraemon ! I used to feel like a zombie at the end.
I remember when we first got those video tapes asking my mum "what the hell are they talking about" because I didn't understand a word (admitidley there are some simalarities), hey after 15 hours a week of that stuff, we could pick up most of the Cantonese language. The pronunciation would be way off because we'd never speak it (until we went to Chinese school at the weekends). With many people now trying to learn Mandarin. I think the TV would be an idea for some people.
